In our gardens in Europe the native Buxus sempervirens is mainly used. This species is susceptible to both the Buxus moth and fungal diseases and requires extra care.
In recent years, research has shown that there are more tolerant Buxus species, especially in the group of Buxus microphylla. These species are available from specialised tree growers or garden centres.
The latest development in the Buxus range are even fully resistant varieties, resistant to fungal diseases, which are marketed under the brand name Betterbuxus®: www.betterbuxus.com. At present, there are a number of historic gardens planted with these new varieties. They will be available in the coming years for the private gardener through the specialised trade.
